WhatsApp GIF can hack your phone
WhatsApp GIF can hack your phone

Is there any place to stay safe from these hackers or we are not able to find out one? Of course, it is too difficult because we don’t know what kind of strategy they present now or later on. Day by day we are becoming the victim of these hacking traps. If you watch out our previous blogs we have talked about hackers hacking on smartphones or presenting some hacking strategies by sending emails. Now the situation is tough for you as the top trending messaging app i.e. WhatsApp is being hijacked by hackers with malicious GIFs. It can be quite shocking for you but actually it is going on.

Yes folks, this Facebook owned messaging app is facing a serious situation because millions of users operate WhatsApp so the company is afraid to lose its audience. Obviously, we know that if any hacking system is going on, no user will stay with that app and move on completely. Even suggest others not to operate the app on your smartphone. I have written this blog to share complete information about WhatsApp GIF bug so readout to stay safe and keep others alert.

Unauthorized access to WhatsApp by hackers via malicious GIF bug

Add WhatsApp too in your list of “Platform where hackers are ruling”. I am speaking very frankly that WhatsApp can create a big problem for you now. I tell you how, as a security bug has been found in this messaging app which enables hackers to get access to your device and steal your personal information. They are introducing a malicious GIF file in your device known as “double-free vulnerability bug” in WhatsApp. Let me share what this double-free bug is? It is a memory corruption that can crash any application in your smartphone and also can access your device even if you don’t allow permission.

What Researcher informs us about WhatsApp GIF bug?

In a technical write-up on GitHub, the researcher said that hackers don’t get access to a users’ device simply by sending an infected GIF. This vulnerability gets triggered only when the user opens up a corrupt file.

  • Hackers send GIF files to users via WhatsApp; in case if the hacker is in the user’s contact list then this corrupted file will download automatically without any interaction of the user.
  • The researcher said “The exploits work well until WhatsApp version 2.19.230. The vulnerability is officially patched in the WhatsApp version 2.19.244.”
  • The researcher warned us to prevent this hacking issue; users must update their WhatsApp to the latest version.

Regarding this issue  WhatsApp spokesperson said that “The key point that the vulnerability disclosure makes is that this issue affects the users on the sender side, meaning the issue could, in theory, occur when the user takes action to send a GIF. The issue would impact their devices. It was reported and quickly addressed last month. We have no reason to believe this affected any users through of course we are always working to provide the latest security features to our users.”

Is it the first time WhatsApp facing security issues?

No folks, WhatsApp already faced security issues earlier. In fact, this year, a few months ago we got to know from Financial Times that the situation is quite serious for the WhatsApp when attackers are allowed to slip in spyware on every user’s device.

I know they provided the solution but they didn’t know how big loss users faced at that time. Even I can share one more example when we got to know that a Kink was found in WhatsApp which was easier and possible to manipulate or spoof the messages of the messaging app.

Conclusion

Again WhatsApp is ready to face a critical situation regarding this hacking and all. Such a big company it is and hackers can enter and present their hacking strategy might be shocking for everyone. WhatsApp is a top trending app so how can they sit idle or why don’t they keep the app with good security? Chances are very high of losing users.

To keep your smartphone safe you need to update your apps and operating system time to time. By this way you can keep yourself and your important data safe.
