Google Fuchsia
Google Fuchsia

I know what you are thinking after reading the headline. Whether I am going to talk about Fuchsia color or it is a flower! Anybody will think of color and flower after reading the word Fuchsia. Let me tell you that here, I am not going to talk about the color or flower but I will talk about Fuchsia operating system. Shocked? What the heck is this? I mean seriously, Fuchsia is an operating system and you will get to know all its knick knacks in the write-up ahead.

Google has been working on this operating system from long time. It is an early stage experimental project. It is a next generation operating system, it is still a sort of mystery that what is its purpose and on which devices it will run? It is also being reported that an official Fuchsia device will be released in three to five years. It has been said that Fuchsia will replace Android in the coming times. We have to wait for Google’s stand on this statement. As per Bloomberg, “The project, known as Fuchsia, was created from scratch to overcome the limitations of Android as more personal devices and other gadgets come online.”

Now we will talk here all the aspects of Fuchsia.

1. Logo

Fuchsia, the new operating system of Google has got new logo in 2017, which is an infinity loop. Its design is not yet explained. The new logo had replaced the simple magenta square.

2. Languages

Fuchsia is written using Flutter software development kit. It also supports Dart. Its most of the user interface is written using this language. Google has also introduced support of Swift the language of Apple’s IOS.

Flutter- It is a mobile application development framework. It was developed by Google. It is used for developing cross platform applications. It uses Dart to develop high performance apps.

Dart- It is Google’s own scripting language, Adwords is powered by this language.

3. Features of Fuchsia

The new operating system of Google will have the following features:

a. Graphical interface

If we talk about the graphical interface of Fuchsia, the first noticeable feature is its Material Design. It is using vulcan based graphic renderer. It has Escher which specializes in shadow. Interface of Fuchsia is written using software development kit of Flutter and it is cross platform. Meaning there by few parts of Fuchsia will work on android also. There are two different layouts of Fuchsia:

Armadillo- It is mobile centric design

Capybara- For desktops and laptops

The Home screen of Fuchsia is a vertical scroll list of apps. There is a profile section in the center. Here you will see your profile picture, date, city name and the battery icon. Above the profile section, there are a bunch of cards which are known as story. It has a variety of cards for different apps. It also has a search option. Fuchsia has a keyboard which resembles with Gboard.

It has an efficient multitasking feature. Suppose, you have dragged one app on another app, then you will be given the option of split screen mode. In this mode, you can work on two apps simultaneously one app will be on the half screen and other app will be there on the remaining half screen. The interface is said to enrich the user experience and somewhat resembles with Google now. This was about Armadillo which is also known as Dragonglass.

Capybara is still in making and it only has a taskbar on which time is mentioned. We are just supposing that it will be based on Windows Continuum feature. We have to wait for further updates by Google to know more about the user interface.

b. It is one for all devices operating system

Today many of us have laptops, desktops and phones as well. Fuchsia will run in unison across all devices. If we talk about Google, it wants to stay with us everywhere like watches, smartphones, tv, laptop, speakers, car, etc. In order, to connect with all the devices Google needed a scalable operating system. As Fuchsia is built using Flutter software development kit, which is used to develop cross-platform applications, we can say that Google is actually creating a cross platform operating system. It has also introduced Swift, Apple’s programming language to make it work across all devices.

c. Google assistant oriented

Whatever activity you are doing on your phone using this operating system will be in knowledge of Google assistant. Google assistant will appear for the information whenever we will press home button. Assistant’s authority on Android phones is very well known to everyone. In case of Fuchsia, it has increased manifold. Like, if you want to go somewhere and you are browsing the places, you can ask assistant to send text your friend to come at the place at the specified time. As per the information available, assistant is said to have access to everything like person, place, thing, event or concept whichever is represented in Fuchsia platform.

4. Advantages over Android

The advantages of Fuchsia operating system on Android are as follows:

a. In terms of Sync and navigation

Android has penetrated in the lives of all of us in the form of smart phones, Android tv, wear operating systems, Android Auto, etc. Google has no doubt already tried to connect all these together. Still, it seems like they are apart because they didn’t have that scalable operating systems. May be Google wants to use Fuchsia as an operating system which will connect all the devices like smartphones, watches, cars, TVs and laptops.  Thus giving the same user experience across all. For example, you have copied something from your laptop and you can paste it on your phone. If I talk in my context, suppose I wrote an article and forgot to save that. In case of fuchsia I will just open Docs on my phone and save it. This is something which is already available in Apple devices and Mac operating system. Fuchsia will provide better synchronization across all the devices as it is made using Flutter SDK.

b. In terms of App representation

If we talk about Android apps they appear properly streamlined in smartphones, but they cannot adapt with tablets and other devices. They stretch out. As Fuchsia will be a cross device platform it will solve this problem and apps will be available in their true form and shape. There will be no need to open any app in portrait mode.

c. Fuchsia Prototypes

I was actually not focusing this point  but when I read the statement of “Hiroshi Lockheimer”, I was like ah! We are taking Fuchsia very casually. Google might have some very big plans for it. So, here I will talk about devices which according to me may be the prototypes Google is working on for Fuchsia. First, read what Hiroshi Lockheimer have said as The Verge quoted, “We are looking at what a new take on an operating system could be like. And so I know out there people are getting so excited, saying, ‘Oh, this is the new Android,’ or ‘This is the new Chrome OS,’ Fuchsia is not really about that. Fuchsia is just pushing the state of the art in terms of operating systems and things that we learn from Fuchsia we can incorporate into other products.”

After reading this statement I was like Google is certainly working on something as a device for Fuchsia. After research, I got to know that Fuchsia OS is being tested on Pixelbooks. As per the report of Bloomberg, Fuchsia team wants to create a unified operating system. An OS which could run on all across Google devices, replace Android and Chrome, giving all power to Google Home.

5. Fuchsia vs. Chrome and Android

Fuchsia is different from Chrome and Android. It is built using is Google’s own micro kernel. It is not built on Linux kernel. Nw read ahead to know about what is Zircon.

What is Zircon?

It is the microkernel developed by Google. Earlier it was known as Magenta. It is written in C++. It was developed by a coder named Travis Gieselbrecht. He also created a kernel that empowers operating system Haiku.

Nobody is actually sure about what Google will do with Fuchsia, as in another statement The Verge quoted Lockheimer said, “It’s not just phones and PCs. in the world of internet of things (IOT), there are an increasing number of devices that requires operating system and new runtimes and so on. I think there’s a lot of room for multiple operating systems with different strengths and specializations. Fuchsia is one of those things so, stay tuned.

This statement itself demonstrates that Google is not just playing with a new toy but it is actually planning something very big, something which will impact the world of mobile phones and laptops. Nobody knows why Google is inventing this as an operating system. No one except the tech giant itself can tell on which devices it will be used. It is very difficult to predict, what it is about to do but I am very sure it will be something which will raise the brows of the rivals of Google. This was all about Fuchsia by Google. We will keep you updated with the new happenings as soon as we get to know so get in touch with us for more updates.

Till then, keep reading! Keep sharing!
